Betty Jocelyne Okagua Apiafi is a Nigerian politician who currently serves as the Senator representing Rivers West Senatorial District, on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party. She was a Federal House of Representatives Member for Abua/Odual-Ahoada East Federal Constituency of Rivers State, between 2007 and 2019. She is the first female member of the Nigerian House of Representatives and Senate from Rivers state. Apiafi is an economist, retired banker and educationist.

Political History
In 2007, Apiafi was elected into the House of Representatives, on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party, to represent the Abua/Odual/Ahoada East Federal Constituency of Rivers State. She served in this capacity till 2019.
During her time in the House of Representatives, she was a strong advocate for women’s affairs, education, and bank sector reforms. Apiafi also served as the Chairman of the House Committee on Health, and the Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Diaspora.
In 2019, she was elected into the 9th National Assembly to represent the Rivers West Senatorial District, on the platform of PDP. She is the current Chairman of the Senate Committee on Women’s Affairs.
She will be retiring from her position as the senator representing Rivers West senatorial district in the upcoming 2023 election.
